The other day, I was watching previews for this season’s Biggest Loser. This season, there are two girls who are well over 200 lbs who were once models. The one girl was weeping about how no guy had asked her for her number in three years. I rolled my eyes compassionately.
Then, a few nights later, I had a chat session with a guy on facebook…a guy I’d never met. It was odd. Disconcerting. Awkwardly flattering. After a few short lines, he asked me for my phone number. I laughed thinking of my compassion for the chubby ex-model.
But, it got me thinking about how different men and women are…in our interactions with one another.
Men are direct. “Hey, I think you’re beautiful. Can I have your phone number so that we can chat?”
Women are more indirect. “Hi. How are you? Where are you from? What do you do? What’s your favorite color? What’s your favorite restaurant? What’s your favorite baseball team?” If I’m honest with myself, it’s all code for, “Hey, I think you’re hot. Can you take my number and call me so that we can get to know each other better?”
I was taken aback that this guy wanted my number. I don’t know if it was shock that he wanted my number or his technique. Let me chat with a random woman on facebook and ask for her number. It’s no different than what happens at the bar. You see someone. You talk for a few minutes. You exchange numbers. Most likely no phone calls are made. It’s a dance that singles perpetuate. It is, however, very random.
Is this why I’m single? I should probably find a friend who’s not married and make a pact that if when we hit a certain age neither of us is married, that we’ll wed 🙂
I think God has something better in mind, though.
