Reality check

Despite the weak state of the economy here in the US, I want for nothing.  I don’t take that for granted, unless I start comparing what I have to what others have.  When I worked in Camden, it was really easy to appreciate what I have because I understood lack.  However, working in an affluent area tends to make me jaded.  I see my Satrun compared to the BMW’s, Mercedes and Volvos and I find myself…wanting a nicer car.  I see the houses and I want a nicer house.

What I really need right now is a reality check.  Right now, millions  billions of people are starving.  My stomach is full.  Billions of people don’t have clean water.  The water in my toilet bowl is cleaner than the water some people drink.  There are people living in war-torn countries, women and children being raped and killed.  I live in a peaceful country where, as a general rule, women and children are safe.  Right now, there are people in jail because of their faith or because they’ve spoken out against their governments.  I can say whatever I want (without threatening anyone, of course) and still retain my freedom.

I am a blessed person.  I don’t take that for granted.

Thank you for reading my reality check.  I have a feeling that I’m not the only person right now, in the US or elsewhere, who needs one.
