American Idol and the porn industry

I want to see human trafficking wiped off the face of the earth.  If you don’t know that, then you need to read my blog more often.

In my heart of hearts, I believe that human trafficking is happening on a massive scale because people have a depraved appetitie for children.  Women and children are being objectified.  They are treated as less than human, less valuable than a piece of garbage on the street.

Then tonight I am watching American Idol, which I’ve looked forward to since David Cook won last year, and some child shows up in a skimpy bikini and stripper shoes.  She can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but she looks like she works out and tans.  She gets passed along to Hollywood.

What pisses me off about the complete lack of judgment of American Idol is that they’ve reinforced two messages that feed into human trafficking.

First, they’ve told this girl that they value her body more than they value her.  They told her (and millions of impressionable girls) that their value is found in their body.  What they said is that if you wear a bikini and jump up and down, that then you will be respected.  The truth is that they lusted after her body.

Second, they’ve told the millions of men who watch this show that it is ok to objectify a woman.  They gave into their appetite for a child.  How is that different than what the porn industry does?

Speaking of the porn industry…I heard that they are looking for a $5 billion bailout.  If our government supports the objectification of women, which feeds into the human trafficking industry, I am going to start a letter writing campaign, starting at the top with our president elect, going all the way to my local government.

I know that American Idol never claims social responsibilty…especially in terms of human trafficking.  However, I lost all respect for the show this week.  There’s no longer a contest for me between American Idol and The Biggest Loser.  At all.
